Your skincare routine might be causing more harm than good.

We're all aware of the importance of , and many of us have a daily regimen that includes applying a variety of products to our faces. However, are you aware that you could be making a significant error that's actually harming your skin more than it's helping?

According to one , many of us are overdoing it with products that "overstrip" the skin and remove the natural oils we produce. These oils are crucial for maintaining healthy skin, and if you strip your skin too much, your body will start producing even more oil to compensate - resulting in oily skin.

Maja, a medical aesthetician, shared a video on TikTok where she targeted some of the "stupidest skincare trends" she's observed on the social media platform, stating there's one thing people do that worsens their skin appearance.

While it's common knowledge that cleansing your skin is important, Maja emphasised that this should only be done at night. If you're also doing it in the morning, you're disrupting your skin's natural oil production.

She explained: "There are literally people on this app saying to cleanse your skin morning, night, and sometimes midday. Basically, they're telling you to overstrip your skin. Here's the number one rule in life: only cleanse your skin at night time, and rinse your face with water in the morning, because you don't want to strip your skin of its natural oil production.

"Even if you use a retinol before bed, the retinol will be completely absorbed in your skin or even rubbed off on your pillow. Therefore, rinsing your face with water in the morning is sufficient enough. And yes, this method also works for oily, acne-prone skin. Try it first, then come back and tell me how great it is."

Fans of Maja's regime were quick to support her claims; numerous viewers chimed in with their experiences, echoing that such advice was often prescribed by dermatological professionals. Other respondents revelled in the positive effects on their own skin since ceasing to cleanse in the morning.

One follower commented: "Thank you! I was told by an aesthetician years ago to only wash at night and rinse with water in the morning. My skin has never been better." Another responded: "Oily skin here, she's absolutely right. My skin has never been better."
